Negotiations for Your New Contract Begin

On Tuesday, March 5-6, Ralphs and the union bargaining committees met to kick-off negotiations for your new contract.  We know these discussions are important to you. They are important to our division and the company, too. The resulting contract will guide your compensation and our operations for the next several years.

In our opening sessions, the company and union exchanged initial proposals. Ralphs also had an independent marketing consultant present information about the competitive landscape and economy in the Southern California market.

Our intent in presenting this information was to share how competition, including pricing and market share, has affected our business in the past, now and in the future.

Ralphs is committed to a contract that will do three important things:

  1. Provide good stable jobs and competitive pay and benefits for our associates
  2. Enable us to operate our stores to meet customer needs
  3. Keep our stores competitive in this changing and competitive retail environment

Negotiations is about finding areas of agreement and working through issues where we disagree. It’s about allocating available resources in a balanced way for your wages, health care, pension and other benefits. It’s about meeting your needs and keeping our stores competitive, too.

It’s early. We are at the very start of talks. During these negotiations, we encourage you to learn as much as you can. We will provide you information about key issues. The union will, too. Read and consider them both, so when the time comes for you to vote on an agreement, you can make the decision that is right for you.

We will keep you up to date on negotiations with regular updates posted on your store communication board, FEED, and through your store leader. If you have any questions during this process, please talk to your store leader.
