Company and Union to Continue to Work Toward an Agreement – More Bargaining Dates Scheduled

August 26th, 2019

The company and union bargaining committees met over the weekend to continue negotiating for a new contract. We made some progress on open language items with both parties agreeing to drop several things. There are still a few more language matters to work through, but we are hopeful we will continue to make progress toward the company’s and union’s goals for contract language.

Most of our discussions centered around wages with several counter proposals taking place throughout the weekend; however, we remain far apart on wages. We are committed to higher wages. Our wage proposals offer more money than what was agreed upon and ratified in your 2016 agreement.

As we have said all along wages are just one part of your total compensation. We are also making significant investments to keep your high-quality health care benefits affordable and your pension stable and secure. Here’s where our health and pension proposals stand today:

  • Over the next three years, we would invest more than $400 million for your health care benefits. What does that mean for you? Ralphs would increase what we already pay to an average of $14,000 a year for your coverage. For a Ralphs associate, an entire family pays just $60 a month or $720 a year for coverage. Ask your family and friends, we think they would agree that this is a generous benefit.
  • We would also invest more than $227 million to secure your pension over the next three years. What does that mean for you? Our contributions would increase to maintain your current level of pension benefits, which includes an early retirement option for some associates at age 50, depending on your years of service – that’s unheard of in today’s workplace. 93% of people employed by American companies do not receive a defined pension benefit.

We respect union representatives’ efforts to obtain the best package for their members. We believe our proposals represent an investment in you and Ralph’s future and have a shared goal in a balanced and fair agreement.

We have more bargaining dates scheduled for Sept. 4-8. We will continue to update you as negotiations progress. You can check your store communication board, FEED, and the Ralphs hotline number 800-615-7279 for more information. If you have any questions during this process, please talk to your store leader.
